What is a Japanese marriage agency? How are they different from dating apps? Two solid questions that go hand in hand. Obviously, Japanese marriage agency very particular to Japan, although there has been a proliferation of Japanese marriage agencies around the world into different countries with different people looking for a marriage partner from Japan. Obviously that's part of what's involved here, but there is a heck of a lot more to it.

So, my name is Stephen Frost, I'm the founder of Marriage Matching. We are a Japanese marriage agency here in Osaka, Japan. We also do dating coaching to help people along their journey when they are serious about finding a marriage, and they just need that extra little bit of help. But primarily we work as a Japanese marriage agency. So with that understood, there is a certain grounding for why I understand what I'm talking about.

So, what is a Japanese marriage agency? In short, it's much the same as a normal marriage agency. People come to a marriage agency to register to find a marriage partner. So you have a very, very defined dating pool of people who are serious about finding a marriage partner. One of the key things which is different when it comes to what a Japanese marriage agency is, is in and around the behaviors with the matchmakers involved.

So obviously, traditional Japanese matchmaking is involved, alongside a lot of the actual background checks that go on and that level of things. When you're working with a marriage, Japanese marriage agency, or when you're wanting to work with a Japanese marriage agency, there is a very strict process which is involved, which involves a set of consultations, getting to know people.

Both sides need to be able to actually work with each other effectively for the process to actually work properly. This is a far cry from what used to be things like the mail order bride system, which still works for certain countries in different parts of the world, very, very different from what we do as Japanese marriage agency though. Within Japan, obviously it is very difficult here to actually meet new people, there are layers of trust which are involved. Japan is a very honor and trust based society. So because of that reason, when it comes to actually getting to know people, very, very challenging, unless you actually get introductions because you need that point of contact, that point to trust, so that forms one of the things. Part of the ways we actually do that as a Japanese marriage agency is through the consultations, the interviews, the background checks.

So when someone is actually coming to us to actually meet potential partners, they know that people have been through a verification process. They know that we have spent time getting to know them, and we do actually understand them and deem them to be trustworthy people. So that is one of the core things when it actually comes to what a Japanese marriage agency is.

It is in part a place where people come for a verified introduction, where they come to know people because they know those people are trustworthy, because of what actually goes on. On top of that, within what a Japanese marriage agency is you have got the work of people like the traditional Japanese matchmaker. A Japanese matchmaker, certainly the traditional side of things, will look very carefully at compatibility between couples.

Obviously, there are different levels of service within this. For some people who are on the lower level it's a lot more of a quick superficial check. Obviously I say superficial here, but it's anything but superficial in reality because you're dealing with a train professional who can work out very quickly, almost at a moment's glance, whether a couple is likely to be compatible or not.

If they're not, then things do not proceed for that couple to an introduction, to an Omiai. Obviously, when you're going into a full matchmaking service and you've got the traditional Japanese matchmaker working to a deeper extent, they will be assessing things, there will be deeper conversations with people, just checking for key details in and around shared values, beliefs, ideas for the future, shared goals, those kind of things. In order to ensure that there really is that core level of compatibility, which is going to lead to a viable match for marriage. So that is all core to what is a Japanese marriage agency. It is a place where people come because they are defined as looking for a marriage partner.

They may be looking for a Japanese partner. They may be looking for a partner from overseas. Certainly within the work that we do as a Japanese marriage agency here in Osaka, we work with a lot of Japanese clients who are looking for apart from overseas. So we get that side of things as well as obviously people from overseas looking for a Japanese partner, so the two things feed in together. There is a lot obviously going on within what we do, and basically we balance it off in different ways. Some people are just looking for a Japanese partner, they’re Japanese themselves, and we can assist with that as well. So, layers of complexity within it, but realistically our job is to actually simplify things. How are Japanese marriage agencies actually different from dating apps? In a lot of core ways very, very big differences. One of the core things, obviously, consultations we spend time getting to know people before we’ll actually go through a registration. On top of that, we will go through a verification process doing background checks, checking ID, checking all sorts of statements to do with finance, employment, education, all of those kind of things. So there are much, much deeper background checks that we go through, which is one of the reasons why within Japan, when people are seriously looking for a marriage partner, they will opt to go to a Japanese marriage agency because of those layers of trust within there, because of those layers of verification, very, very different, and it's why a lot of people in Japan have a lack of trust when it comes to dating apps. Even for things like the Pairs and the Omiai dating apps here in Japan. Granted, there's a lot of people in there who are much, much younger. However, they do tend to struggle due to lack of verification, lack of trust. So again, we tend to find that people gravitate and graduate towards us, having actually been through various different dating apps because they're looking for something more defined, more verifiable, and obviously they know that when they're working with a Japanese marriage agency, a good, reliable one, there is a verified dating pool of people who are trustworthy and seriously looking for marriage. So, what is a Japanese marriage agency? It is an organization which facilitates introductions between people who have been background checked, verified, interviewed, and are known to be seriously looking for marriage, who then get to meet other people in the same position. How are they different from dating apps? A lot of things to do with the background checks, the consultation.
